Hygiene treatment will be performed by our caring hygienist Susannah.

Susannah, your hygienist will thoroughly and gently clean your teeth, which will involve removing the soft plaque and hard calculus (also known as tartar).

She can also remove the stains that you have picked up from your daily lifestyle such as tea, coffee, red wine and smoking.

In addition, she will also show you how to maintain good oral hygiene specific to your mouth to prevent the build-up of plaque giving you a personalized daily regime.

Susannah is also highly trained and experienced in treating patients who have gum disease. There may be several signs that you may have gum disease, which include:

  • Bad breath
  • Bleeding gums
  • Swollen and puffy gums
  • An unpleasant taste
  • Loose teeth
  • Drifting of teeth

Some people may have no signs of the disease at all even though they have active gum disease!

Most people who have gum disease are often unaware of it for several years, as, like cancer, it goes unnoticed until the very late stages of its progression.

In it’s early stages it is rarely painful and often symptomless.

It is caused by the accumulation of plaque, which is built up on the teeth over time by improper cleaning. Plaque is essentially a localized collection of bacteria, which attack the teeth and gums. The body will quickly response to the invading bacteria by producing a defense mechanism that will destroy not only the bacteria but also your gums and bone that supports your teeth. If left untreated, the end result is tooth loss.

When plaque has been attached to the tooth for a long period of time, the gum will move away from the tooth resulting in a pocket. Once a pocket has formed it is almost impossible for you to clean under it, at home, and it will start to harbor bacteria. At this point you will need to see a hygienist to clean it with special apparatus. Once the bacteria have been removed, the gum will reattach itself back onto the tooth resulting in healing of that pocket.

The principle of regular hygiene appointments is to prevent gum disease getting to the advanced stage of pocket formation.
